The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has held a closed-door meeting with some prominent members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from Kano State, fueling speculation about an impending political shift ahead of the 2027 general election.
Those present at the meeting included Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South in the Senate; Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, representing Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure federal constituency; Hon. Aliyu Sani Madaki, representing Dala federal constituency, and a former lawmaker, Hon. Badamasi Ayuba.
The development was confirmed by Senior Special Assistant to the APC National Chairman on Visual Communication and Events, Aminu Dahiru, in a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday evening. According to him, the meeting was part of the groundwork for the politicians’ planned defection from NNPP to the APC.
“It is public knowledge that in recent times, these prominent politicians have openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the leadership style and perceived injustice from the NNPP’s national leader, Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso,” Ganduje’s aide wrote.
Political observers say the move could significantly alter the political dynamics in Kano State, a key battleground. The NNPP had in 2023 emerged as a dominant force in the state under the Kwankwasiyya Movement, but internal cracks have continued to widen, with top members accusing the bloc leadership of marginalisation.
The NNPP was yet to issue any official statement on the development.
