At approximately 11:56am on Friday, Kano State governor, Abba Yusuf officially handed over appointment letter to Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, reinstating him as the 16th Emir of Kano.

The ceremony took place at the Government House in Kano, marking a significant moment in the state’s political and traditional landscape.

Governor Yusuf, during his presentation, emphasised that the decision to reinstate Sanusi II followed extensive deliberations that was fully backed by the Emirate Council’s kingmakers.

He expressed profound gratitude to the members of the State House of Assembly for their diligence in the passage of the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Bill which paved the way for this reinstatement.

“I am confident that Sanusi II will utilise his vast experience and intellect to bring about positive change and progress to our esteemed emirate,” Governor Yusuf stated.

He further affirmed the legality of the reinstatement noting, “Once a bill is signed, it becomes law and by the power of that law, Sanusi II stands reinstated.”

However, this reinstatement comes amid legal controversy with ex parte order issued by the Federal High Court on Thursday which barred Governor Yusuf from reinstating the deposed emir.

Sanusi II, known for his previous tenure marked by outspoken views on socio-economic reforms and governance was deposed in March 2020 under controversial circumstances.

The reinstatement of Sanusi II is expected to have far-reaching implications for Kano’s political landscape as well as its traditional leadership structure.
