Piqued by escalating violence in parts of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, the Plateau State Government has warned residents against taking the law into their own hands or engaging in any form of reprisals, urging full cooperation with security agencies to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Arc. Samuel Jatau, the government condemned in strong terms the barbaric attacks on Dorowa Babuje and Nding communities, which claimed innocent lives and triggered widespread unease.
The SSG also condemned a security incident in the early hours of Tuesday around the Terminus–Gadan Bako axis in Jos, which further fuelled tension in Jos North local government area of the state.
The statement read, “Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the acts as senseless and cowardly, expressing deep condolences to bereaved families and praying for quick recovery of the injured.”
He lamented that the violence undermined ongoing gains from dialogue, reconciliation, and community engagement initiatives that had restored relative peace.
The governor directed security agencies to immediately intensify operations in the affected areas, reinforce presence in neighbouring communities, and ensure perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted without delay.
“In a clear warning against self-help, Government urges community leaders, youths, and residents to remain calm, vigilant, and strictly law-abiding,” he further stated.
The statement stressed that no individual or group should resort to reprisals or take laws into private hands, insisting security forces must be allowed to handle investigations and enforcement professionally.
Government also encouraged the residents to provide credible intelligence to aid ongoing probes while avoiding actions that could escalate tensions.
Reaffirming unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property statewide, the Plateau Government said proactive measures were being strengthened to avert further breaches and sustain peace, stability, and harmony.
In the same vein, the chairman of Jos North LGA, Barr. John Christopher, has dismissed the rumours making the round that the state government had imposed curfew in Jos North LGA.
The chairman, in a statement issued to newsmen in Jos, said, “This is to inform the general public that there is no curfew in place in Jos North Local Government Council and its environs.”
According to the statement, “In light of recent incidents, security measures have been heightened to ensure the safety of all residents. Security operatives are on high alert to contain any situation.
He advised law-abiding citizens to go about their normal daily activities without fear or panic, while also urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
“We assure you that everything is under control, and we’re working to maintain peace and stability in Jos North,” the chairman added.
