Plateau Youths Protest Acute Water Scarcity, declare ‘No Water, No Vote’ In 2027

Youths and residents of Mabudi, headquarters of Langtang South local government area of Plateau State have staged a peaceful protest over the persistent water scarcity in the area.

They warned that they may boycott future elections in the area if the situation was not urgently addressed.

The protesters, who turned out in their numbers, marched through the community wearing blue T-shirts with the inscription “No Water, No Vote,” while chanting slogans to press home their demands.

Some of the demonstrators also brandished placards, calling for the immediate provision of potable water, as they lamented the absence of basic amenities in the area.

One of the protesters, Mr Nanlir Gambo, told our Correspondent that the protest was meant to draw the attention of the government and elected officials, like their representatives in the state and National Assembly, to the urgent need for a sustainable water supply scheme in the area.

He lamented that residents were forced to rely on unsafe water sources, calling the situation unacceptable.

Gambo noted that the recurring water shortage had placed a heavy burden on households, especially on women and children who trek long distances to fetch water.

Another protester, Nandom Bitrus, stressed that the youths were united in demanding immediate government intervention.

Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to the chairman of Langtang South LGA, Mr Butko Bako Iliya, when contacted on the issue, said the council had already put in place temporary measures to mitigate the crisis.

According to him, the Council chairman, Hon. Nanfa Alhassan Nbin, has been providing water through tankers since the onset of the dry season, with at least one tanker supplied to each village daily.

Iliya added that the council had also received directives from the Plateau state government to intensify efforts to address water scarcity.

Similarly, the Plateau State Ministry of Water Resources and Energy has commenced both immediate and long-term interventions to resolve the water situation in the local government.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Lohnan V. Gambo, led a high-powered delegation to the area following an appeal by the council chairman to Governor Barr Caleb Mutfwang.

Gambo, who was in Langtang South on Tuesday, said the governor had directed the Ministry to implement urgent measures while working on sustainable solutions, disclosing that a comprehensive geophysical survey had already commenced in Mabudi and surrounding communities.

He assured residents that the government was committed to providing a lasting solution to the water challenge.

Since the delegation on behalf of the chairman, the Council Secretary, Hon. Nanman Luka Domtau, expressed appreciation for the swift response and assured the council of the council’s full support.

Also speaking, the Galadima of Mabudi, Chief Ringjul Dashe, described water as essential to life and commended the government for its prompt response to the people’s plight.

Again, Terrorists Kill 2 customs officials, injure 2 Residents In Kebbi. BY KABIR WURMA, Birnin Kebbi.

Suspected terrorists were said to have killed two Customs Marine officers and injured two other residents along the Bagudo highway under the Bagudo local government area in Kebbi State.      Though there was no official statement from the Kebbi State Customs Command, a source in the area, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred on Wednesday at the Customs checkpoints.       According to the source, the attackers were said to have burnt the two officers while they were asleep in their hut at the checkpoint.       The source added that two officers were burnt to death while sleeping in the night at their checkpoint, and also shot another two civilians, but escaped with injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.         Contacted the Assistant Public Relations Officer of Kebbi Customs Command, Mubarak Mustapha, on the phone in the afternoon on Wednesday, who didn’t pick up our Correspondent’s calls.
