Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has strongly criticised the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the abrupt decision to postpone the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, accusing the governing body of devaluing the women’s game.

CAF announced on Thursday that the tournament, originally slated for a later date, has been moved and will now take place from July 25 to August 16. The body cited the need for additional preparation time for both itself and the host nation to ensure a “better competition.”

However, the decision has been met with sharp rebuke from the Al-Ittihad defender, who questioned the timing and logic behind the move, especially given that WAFCON 2026 serves as the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Speaking to the BBC, Plumptre did not hold back, drawing a direct comparison to the treatment of major men’s tournaments.

“It just wouldn’t happen for other tournaments in women’s football, especially in men’s football,” Plumptre stated. “The last WAFCON wasn’t less important because it wasn’t qualification for a World Cup, but obviously this is a chance for teams to qualify for the World Cup.”

The defender highlighted the significant stakes for emerging nations, noting that this edition marks the first time the tournament will feature 16 teams, offering a historic opportunity for growth.

“It’s the first time the tournament will have 16 teams, all of which will want the chance to qualify for the World Cup, and that’s a big deal for many teams,” she explained. “Many teams haven’t even played at WAFCON before and have never had the opportunity to qualify for a World Cup. It also helps them financially.”

Plumptre’s comments underscore a growing frustration among players regarding last-minute logistical changes that disrupt preparation for what is the most prestigious national team competition in African women’s football.
