The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 23 foreign nationals following a raid on a residential building in the Ota area of the state over alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme, visa scam and other immigration-related offences.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta.

Babaseyi said operatives attached to the Atan-Ota Division carried out the raid at about 11am on August 4 following credible intelligence about suspected fraudulent activities at the location.

According to him, the police promptly mobilised to the premises, secured the building and arrested the suspects for investigation.

He said, “23 foreign nationals were arrested in connection with alleged Ponzi scheme, visa scam and other immigration-related offences.”

The spokesperson explained that following preliminary investigation, 21 of the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service on August 5 for further investigation and appropriate action.

He, however, said two of the suspects remained in police custody to face prosecution over alleged Obtaining by False Pretence (OBT) and other related offences, subject to the conclusion of investigations.

Babaseyi said the police investigation was still ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged fraudulent activities and identify other individuals who may be connected with the scheme.
