The suspect, identified as Paul John, a 500-level student and resident of Jiddel in Michika local government area, was apprehended by operatives of the Commissioner of Police’s Monitoring Unit following credible intelligence for impersonation, sexual extortion and cyberstalking.

According to the Command, the suspect created multiple fake social media accounts using the names such as Rose YarLele, Procious Favourite, Wange Precious, Joy Dennis and others, where he used the photos of unsuspecting women without their consent.

Police alleged that the stolen images were posted on WhatsApp, TikTok, and Facebook with offensive captions such as “sexy lesbian” and “I am lesbian.”

Investigations revealed that the suspect also collected nude pictures from some victims, which he allegedly used to blackmail victims for money and sexual favours.

In some cases, he advertised victims for hookup services, thereby tarnishing their reputations and causing them emotional, financial, and social harm.

Confirming the arrest, Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, directed that the suspect be thoroughly investigated and charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.

CP Morris warned against cybercrimes such as sexual extortion, impersonation, and online harassment, stressing that perpetrators would not escape justice.

“The Command remains committed to protecting the dignity, security, and rights of all residents both offline and online,” the Commissioner said, while also advising social media users, particularly women, to be cautious about sharing personal pictures with strangers.

Police urged members of the public to report suspicious online activities or blackmail attempts to security agencies for prompt action.
