The Edo State Police Command has apprehended two suspected kidnappers during routine patrol operations along the Auchi–Igarra Highway in Edo North, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The suspects were reportedly identified by a member of a local vigilante group as part of a kidnapping network, according to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem.
“The Edo State Police Command has recorded significant successes in the fight against kidnapping through proactive patrols and sustained intelligence-led operations in Igarra and its environs, in line with the crime-fighting strategies of the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc,” the statement read.
Police disclosed that the arrest occurred on January 28, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m., when operatives attached to the Igarra Area Command intercepted Muhammed Muamadu Haru, 35, and Abubakar Muhammed Haruna, 25, at a known operational point along the highway.
“The suspects were identified by a vigilante member as members of a kidnapping syndicate during an exchange of fire in one of the joint bush-combing rescue operations.
“Upon recognition, the suspects attempted to escape into the bush but were quickly intercepted and arrested. Investigation is ongoing,” the statement added.
In a separate incident on Monday, February 2, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., a motorcycle patrol team from the Igarra Area Command reportedly thwarted another attempted kidnapping along the Auchi–Igarra Express Road.
During the operation, officers encountered three suspected kidnappers who were allegedly preparing to barricade the road. The suspects reportedly fled into a nearby forest, leaving behind items believed to be used for criminal activities, including food supplies, mobile phones, jack knives, and other personal belongings. Security operatives have since launched bush-combing operations to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police praised the officers for their alertness and dedication, while assuring residents of the command’s resolve to eliminate criminal activities in the state.
He also advised members of the public to stay alert and immediately report any suspicious movement or individuals to the nearest police station or through designated emergency channels.
