The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the release of five victims who were kidnapped in Magongo in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of the State.

The five persons who are indigenes of Magongo, were said to be returning from Jos in Plateau State, after a wedding ceremony but were abducted just before entering their home town.

Confirming their release to LEADERSHIP on Saturday in Lokoja, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State, SP William Ovye Aya, said the victims were rescued by the combined security team in the area, adding that they have since been reunited with their families.

The National President of the Magongo Development Association (MDA), Prince Jordan Akpata, also confirmed that the captives regained their freedom at about 5 p.m. on Friday.

“They are out. They have been reunited with their families,” he said, adding that additional details surrounding the rescue operation would be released subsequently.

Although Prince Akpata did not provide immediate information on whether ransom was paid, he expressed deep gratitude to security agencies, community vigilantes, and concerned individuals whose swift collaboration contributed to their successful release.

“We are grateful. This is a huge relief for the entire Magongo community,” he added.

Residents said the safe return of the victims have restored calm to the area, although concerns remain over the rising trend of highway kidnappings across the state.
