The commissioner of police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has assured non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders that his men and officers will work with them to curb Gender-based Violence (GBV) and other violent crimes.

Kankarofi spoke yesterday in his office at the command’s headquarters in Lokoja, the state capital, during an advocacy visit by members of the Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID) and other civil society groups.

He said civil societies, stakeholders and the state government must work together to ensure that GBV is reduced to the barest minimum in Kogi

He said, “The fight against Gender-based Violence must be a collective responsibility. We have mothers, sisters and daughters; therefore, the problem affects all of us and we need to fight it collectively.”

Earlier, the executive director of PIBCID, Akande Racheal Remilekun, said the visit was to seek the police command’s collaboration in capacity building for women, sensitisation and institutional support.

According to her, the project is being funded by the Nigeria Women Trust Fund (NWTF).

She added that PIBCID had carried out interventions in the Ujagba, Okpachala (Igalamela LGA), Nagazi/Osisi (Adavi LGA), Serikinoma, Adankolo, Felele and Zango/Ajanaku communities in the Lokoja local government area.

According to her, the interventions focused on building the capacity of women and children, ensuring the full implementation of relevant policy documents, and promoting access to information to reduce vulnerability in project communities.
