The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ondo Stats, identified as Favour Olaniyi, whose body was discovered in a bush near his off-campus residence in Akure.

Olaniyi, a student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was reportedly found dead on Saturday near the university’s North Gate, sparking concerns among students and residents of the area.

Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear, although preliminary findings have raised suspicions of possible suicide after a bottle believed to contain a poisonous substance was recovered at the scene.

Confirming the development on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said detectives had commenced a full-scale investigation into the case.

“The Ondo State Police Command has commenced investigation into a suspected suicide case involving one Olaniyi Favour ‘M’, a 23-year-old 100-level student of Federal University of Technology Akure,” Jimoh stated.

He explained that the student “was reportedly found lifeless inside a bush along FUTA North Gate, Akure, on Saturday, 9th May, 2026.”

According to the police spokesperson, officers who visited the scene observed no signs of physical violence on the deceased.

“Detectives who visited the scene observed no visible marks of violence while a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance was recovered at the scene,” he added.

Jimoh further disclosed that the remains had been deposited at the morgue for preservation and possible autopsy, while investigators continue efforts to unravel the exact cause and circumstances of the death.

Reacting to the tragedy, the university described the incident as “sad and unfortunate,” expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and the student community.

In a statement issued by the institution’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, the university said its security personnel promptly alerted the police after the discovery was made.

“The Federal University of Technology Akure is saddened by the unfortunate incident involving one of its students, Favour Olaniyi, a year one student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics who was found dead very close to his off-campus residence on Saturday, May 9, 2026,” the statement read.

The institution noted that police officers, medical personnel and members of the university security team coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue.

It also confirmed that the parents of the deceased had been informed, adding that the university was fully cooperating with security agencies handling the investigation.

According to the statement, counselling support was also being provided to some of the late student’s classmates affected by the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time,” the university stated.
