As the 2027 general election inches closer, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified raid on criminal hideouts aimed at retrieving small arms and light weapons in wrong hands.

The commissioner of police (CP), Baba Azare, vowed to rid the state, especially the hinterlands of criminal elements, making the state safe for visitors, tourists and investors.

Consequently, operatives of the Command have arrested one Blessing Ime Abel, 38, of Ikot Akpa Ntuen village, in Ukanafun local government area, for alleged unlawful possession of a firearm, threat to life, and possession of suspected illicit substances.

Disclosing this to journalists at the state headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia, Uyo, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, said the security measures became necessary to forestall any breach of peace before, during and after the upcoming crucial polls.

She stated that the superior intelligence by one Emekpo, who reported a case of violence threat on the local residents by the suspect was helpful in the operation.

“Acting on the report, operatives of the Command swiftly mobilised and apprehended the suspect. During a search, the suspect was found in possession of one locally made pistol, one live cartridge, and substances suspected to be illicit drugs.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, while investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source of the firearm and the full extent of the suspect’s activities. Upon conclusion of investigation, the suspect will be charged to court accordingly.

“CP Azare, has therefore,  reiterated the Command’s zero  – tolerance for crimes involving firearms and threats to public safety, and assures residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across the State.

“Members of the public are encouraged to continue to support the Police with timely and credible information that will aid crime prevention and detection,” she stated.
