The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a successful surgery at Gemelli Hospital in Rome to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The procedure utilized a video-assisted technique and lasted about 90 minutes.
Vatican medical bulletins noted that while pre-operative tests strongly suspected the condition, the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma was formally confirmed by intraoperative histological examination.
According to Vatican updates, there were no complications during the operation, and the Pope regained consciousness normally afterwards. Oncologists cited by news agencies have noted an encouraging prognosis because the growth was caught early, and his hospital recovery is expected to take roughly a week. Further standard evaluations are underway.
