Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has announced plans to use the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a model for implementing a harmonisation of taxes across Nigeria.
This revelation came during a meeting on revenue administration hosted by the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) for area council chairmen.
Oyedele emphasised that the harmonisation and simplification of taxes are essential for enhancing revenue generation, countering claims that such measures could lead to a reduction in overall revenue.
He commended the proactive steps taken by the FCT-IRS, advocating for collaboration among all stakeholders to effectively address the issue of multiple taxation in Nigeria.
He condemned the use of unorthodox methods for tax collection—particularly on highways and public spaces—calling such practices ‘unacceptable and embarrassing.’
