The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have signed a new partnership to improve energy efficiency in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
The two organisations formalised their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja on Wednesday.
This agreement solidifies a joint commitment to boost research, innovation, and development focused on sustainable and energy-efficient operations within the petroleum industry.
PTDF executive secretary, Ahmed Galadima Aminu, who spoke during the MoU signing ceremony, emphasised that the partnership will enhance cooperation between academia, industry, and government.
“This MoU represents a shared dedication to national progress, particularly in advancing energy efficiency technologies in oil and gas operations,” he said.
Aminu highlighted that the initiative will foster applied research on emerging technologies, promote the transfer and commercialisation of innovations, and invest in human capital development through training and knowledge-sharing programs. “Developing skilled professionals capable of driving energy-efficient solutions is key to the future of Nigeria’s energy sector,” he added.
“Through this partnership, we are setting the stage for joint research on emerging technologies, particularly in sustainable oil and gas operations, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. This is a timely and necessary step as we navigate the evolving global energy landscape.
“Equally important is our joint effort to invest in human capital development. Through training programs, innovation skills enhancement initiatives, and knowledge-sharing platforms, we aim to develop a generation of highly skilled professionals and researchers who will drive innovation and excellence across the energy value chain in line with the policy direction of this administration.
Echoing this vision, NNPCL executive vice president, Business Services, Sophia Mbakwe, described the agreement as a strategic move to tackle real-world challenges in the energy landscape.
“By combining our strengths, PTDF and NNPCL aim to accelerate the adoption of efficient technologies and build capacity for sustained competitiveness and resilience in the oil and gas industry,” Mbakwe stated.
The collaboration also underscores the importance of local content, ensuring Nigerian talents and technologies play central roles in advancing energy efficiency while supporting the country’s economic diversification and energy transition goals. Through this partnership, PTDF and NNPCL are set to transform Nigeria’s petroleum sector with innovative and sustainable approaches to energy use.
