…Kano Plans Disability Commission
The Kano State Government has announced plans to establish a commission for persons with disabilities to strengthen their inclusion in governance and access to social services.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs, Amina Abdullahi, disclosed this at a programme organised by the Society for People with Disability Forum in Kano, where the group endorsed President Bola
Tinubu and Governor Abba Yusuf for re-election in 2027.
Abdullahi said the government had created a dedicated budget line to address the needs of persons with disabilities, adding that efforts were underway to establish the commission.
She said the proposed commission would institutionalise support for persons with disabilities and promote equal opportunities in education, employment, healthcare and social participation.
“While the department serves as an interim intervention, I am pleased to announce that efforts are underway to establish a dedicated commission for people with disabilities,” she said.
The commissioner added that the state government had provided wheelchairs to people with spinal cord injuries and promoted para-sports to encourage participation by persons with disabilities.
She also said the government, in collaboration with the German development agency, GIZ, had developed an action plan under the Tech for Youth initiative to equip young persons with disabilities with digital skills.
Abdullahi represented Yusuf at the event and received an award presented to the governor by the organisation.
Earlier, the National Chairman of the forum, Comrade Yarima Ibrahim, said the group had assembled representatives from 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory to declare support for Tinubu and Yusuf ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yarima said the organisation was targeting five million votes for Tinubu across Northern Nigeria, expressing confidence that its members would mobilise additional supporters before the elections.
He attributed the endorsement to interventions by the Tinubu administration, including the establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
The group, however, called for greater representation of persons with disabilities in political appointments and government empowerment programmes.
Yarima said the forum expected the Federal Government to honour its demand for five per cent representation in political appointments, including ministerial positions.
He added that Yusuf had assured the group of a commissioner-level appointment for persons with disabilities if re-elected in 2027.
