Katsina State governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has flagged off the construction and dualisation of the Mashi Township 3km Road worth N5.4 billion.

The road is designed to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and stimulate economic activities in the area.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Radda, described the N5.4 billion project as a strategic investment to boost commerce, improve transportation and drive economic development, adding that the project will be executed by Mother Cat Nigeria Limited under the supervision of the Katsina State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport.

Radda said Mashi occupies a strategic position in the state’s commercial activities due to its large market, which attracts traders, farmers and transporters from within and outside Katsina State.

He noted that increasing commercial activities had led to heavy traffic congestion, particularly along the Katsina–Daura corridor.

He explained further that the dualisation project would ease traffic flow, improve access to the market, reduce travel time and transportation costs, enhance road safety and create a more conducive environment for businesses, adding that the project would also support agriculture, create jobs, attract investment and improve residents’ quality of life.

Radda reteitereted that the project forms part of his administration’s Building Your Future agenda and urban renewal programme aimed at transforming infrastructure across the state, reaffirming his commitment to constructing and rehabilitating roads that connect communities, facilitate trade and improve access to schools and healthcare facilities.

He commended the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport for ensuring quality supervision of government projects and urged Mother Cat Nigeria Limited to deliver the road according to specifications and within the agreed timeframe.

The governor appealed to residents to remain patient during the construction period, assuring them that the long-term economic and social benefits would outweigh any temporary inconvenience.

He also pledged to continue managing public resources responsibly while delivering projects that improve livelihoods and promote sustainable development across Katsina State.

Earlier , the Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Engr. Magaji Sani Ingawa, described the project as another practical demonstration of the transformation taking place across the state under Governor Radda’s Building Your Future agenda.

Ingawa said the project, valued at N5.4 billion, involves the construction and dualisation of a modern three-kilometre roadway featuring solar-powered street lighting, reinforced drainage systems, pedestrian walkways and other road safety facilities built to approved engineering standards.

He noted that Mashi is home to one of the largest commercial markets in Katsina State, attracting thousands of traders, farmers, transporters and buyers on every market day.

“The existing road network has struggled to cope with the increasing volume of traffic generated by this economic activity,” he said.

Ingawa explained that upon completion, the project would decongest traffic, improve access to markets, reduce travel time, enhance road safety and create a more conducive environment for businesses and investments.

He added that the benefits would extend beyond Mashi to neighbouring communities, contributing significantly to the economic growth of Katsina State.

He assured residents that the ministry would provide effective supervision to ensure the road is delivered in line with approved specifications and within the agreed timeframe.

Speaking on behalf of the contractor, Abdulrasheed Jami’u, representative of Mothercat Limited, thanked the Katsina State Government for awarding the contract and pledged the company’s commitment to delivering the project on schedule and in full compliance with approved specifications and quality standards.

He also expressed appreciation to the people of Mashi Local Government Area and security agencies for their anticipated cooperation during the execution of the project.

Jami’u said Mothercat Limited remained committed to constructing a durable road that would serve the people effectively and stand the test of time.
