The Kano State Government says it will provide more than 3.5 million meals to vulnerable residents during the 2026 Ramadan feeding programme across eight metropolitan local government areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Religious Affairs and Chairman of the 2026 Ramadan Feeding Programme, Ahmed Tijani, disclosed this while inspecting food preparation centres engaged for the initiative.
Tijani said the government is distributing about 115,000 food packages daily, which will amount to over 3.5 million meals throughout the 29-day Ramadan period.
“If you put 115,000 packages per day, you are coming to over 3.5 million plates to be delivered during the 29 days of Ramadan, Insha Allah,” he said.
He explained that the programme targets vulnerable residents across the eight metropolitan local government areas in the state.
According to him, the inspection was aimed at assessing hygiene standards, food quality and compliance with dietary agreements by the companies contracted to prepare the meals.
The commissioner noted that five major vendors are handling nearly 90 per cent of the cooking contracts. They include Ataam al-Muasim, Ten-to-Ten, Meena, Al-Latif and Deeja’s Chop.
He said most of the vendors prepare about 25,000 meals daily, while others produce between 13,000 and 15,000 meals per day.
Tijani said the government had intensified supervision of the cooking centres to ensure high standards in food preparation and distribution.
“We visited the centres to see the hygienic way the food is being prepared, the condition of the kitchens and the quality of ingredients being used,” he said.
He added that the inspection team was satisfied with the hygiene and quality of food observed at the centres visited.
The commissioner also disclosed that the government had addressed earlier cases of diversion of food to unauthorised centres by some local actors, noting that the situation had largely been resolved through collaboration with councillors.
Tijani expressed confidence that the programme would continue smoothly throughout Ramadan, providing relief to thousands of vulnerable residents observing the fast across the state.
