Michael Olise starred as Bayern Munich delivered a dominant 6-1 thrashing of Atalanta in Italy, all but securing their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.*

Vincent Kompany’s side produced a formidable away performance in the first leg at the Stadio di Bergamo, dismantling opponents who had narrowly overcome Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the previous round.

Olise was a constant menace, tormenting the home defence and unleashing two superb left-footed strikes in each half.

Josip Stanisic opened the scoring in the 12th minute, with Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, and Jamal Musiala extending the lead before Mario Pasalic netted an injury-time consolation for the Italians.

Bayern’s emphatic victory extends their winning run to seven games across all competitions, while Atalanta are now winless in four matches since their comeback win against Dortmund.

The visitors quickly established their attacking intent, with Olise creating a couple of early chances, forcing Marco Carnesecchi into action.

Atalanta’s resistance soon crumbled. A short corner in the 12th minute saw Olise lay the ball off to Gnabry, who expertly carved open the defence for Stanisic to tap in.

The goal emboldened the German side, who seized complete control, adding two more within three minutes midway through the half. Olise scored a magnificent goal, collecting the ball from Dayot Upamecano, fending off three defenders, and then curling a left-footed effort into the bottom corner.

Olise was involved again for the third, feeding Gnabry with a clever pass that was met with an equally clever finish.

Atalanta avoided further damage before the break, though Jackson went close twice and Gnabry rattled the crossbar.

Three substitutions at half-time had minimal impact, and Jackson made it third time lucky seven minutes after the restart, linking up with Luis Díaz on a breakaway.

Bayern’s hunger remained unsated. Alphonso Davies surged forward, releasing Olise, who once again teased the defenders before sweeping the ball onto his dangerous left boot and unleashing a curling effort into the net.

Musiala cushioned a volley home after good work from Jackson – his first goal since the previous round against PSV – and only the woodwork prevented Upamecano from making it seven.

In the dying seconds, Pasalic forced the ball over the line after Jonas Urbig’s save from Nikola Krstovic, but it was scant consolation for the home supporters.
