Eminent history professor, Siyan Oyeweso, has passed away at the age of 64.
The Ede, Osun State-born professor died on Tuesday at an undisclosed hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
Close sources of the deceased told LEADERSHIP that Oyeweso, who until his demise was the chairman of the Governing Board of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, became ill in October after returning from a function in Abuja.
The remains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain were being conveyed to his home town, Ede, in preparation for his burial later on Tuesday, as at the time of this report.
Until his passing, Oyeweso was a lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies at the Osun State University, Osogbo.
His area of research interest includes: Higher Education, Cultural History of Nigeria, Nigeria’s Intellectual History, Yoruba Inter-State Warfare, Islam in Yorubaland, and the Nigerian Civil War.
Oyeweso, born into a Muslim family on February 1, 1961, at Ita Idi-Omo, Oja’ba, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, hailed from Ile Olojo, Ede, Mapo Arogun, Ede, Osun State.
He completed his Secondary School Education in 1978 and studied History at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) between 1978 and 1982.
He later obtained his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Intellectual History from the same University. Oyeweso joined the services of the Lagos State University as an Assistant Lecturer in October 1985 and rose to the rank of Professor in 2004.
He is a Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Academy of Letters.
