The House of Representatives has strongly condemned the armed attack on the convoy of a member of the House representing Borgu/Agwara federal constituency of Niger State, Jafaru Mohammed Ali, which left several security operatives dead and others injured.

Describing the incident as a cowardly and tragic assault, the lawmakers expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and pledged full legislative support for efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon along the Lumma–Babanna Road in Borgu Local Government Area of the state, a volatile corridor notorious for bandit incursions and cross-border movements of armed groups. It was said to have taken place between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. as the convoy approached Babanna, a community near the Republic of Benin border.

In a statement issued on Friday by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the Green Chamber confirmed that the ambush resulted in the deaths of several security operatives, injuries to the lawmaker’s driver and aides, and damage to multiple vehicles.

According to the statement, the attack happened while Hon. Ali was travelling for a constituency engagement.

“The remote distance of the area of the attack further demonstrates the extent to which Honourable Members go to ensure constituency services reach every Nigerian, no matter how far or challenging the terrain,” the statement read.

“The cowardly attack reportedly resulted in the death of gallant security operatives, injuries to his driver and aides, and extensive damage to several vehicles in the convoy. The House deeply mourns the brave operatives who paid the supreme price in the line of duty, and extends heartfelt condolences to their families, the relevant security agencies, and the good people of Niger State.”

The House also wished the injured a speedy recovery and urged security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure those responsible are brought to book.

Reaffirming its commitment to the safety of citizens and lawmakers, the Green Chamber pledged continued legislative support to the executive and security agencies in their efforts to eradicate terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality threatening national peace and stability.

Communities in Niger State, particularly those near the border corridor, have experienced worsening insecurity in recent months, with recurring attacks by bandits and terrorists.

In September, gunmen on motorbikes killed 22 villagers attending a baptism ceremony in the Tillaberi area, while in June, at least 17 soldiers were killed in a gun duel with suspected bandits in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
