Winners of the forthcoming first Education Champions League (ECL) competition in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, will receive a total of N17.5 million as prize money.
Speaking on behalf of the organisers during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt yesterday, retired Professor of Education in the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Eme Ekekwe, said competing secondary schools, which include government, private and missionary schools, will receive certificates of participation at the end of the competition.
Ekekwe stated that while the first position will attract the sum of N10 million, the second and third winners in the competition will go home with N5 million and N2.5 million respectively.
He further stated that 25 percent of the prize for each position would be used by the ECL organisers to procure books for the schools, while another 25 percent would be made available to the schools as institutional support.
Ekekwe said the remaining 50 percent would go to the students who comprise the school’s team while each student’s prize will be paid by ECL into an account designated by the student’s parents.
He said, “Competing schools will receive certificates of participation and will be featured on the ECL website. Winners will receive special prizes and media coverage. Prizes to finalists will include cash gifts, championship trophies and institutional support.”
The retired Professor of Education stated that those behind the ECL were organising the competition with the aim of fostering reading habits among students of secondary schools in the country.
