Rivers: Workers Gather At NLC Secretariat In Solidarity With Fubara

Workers in Rivers State gathered at the secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Port Harcourt to mark the 2025 May Day celebration.

The NLC had earlier announced that it would not hold the customary celebration at Isaac Boro Park, where various unions traditionally conduct a march-past, in solidarity with the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly members.

All NLC affiliate unions converged at the secretariat, along Igboukwu Street, D-Line, Port Harcourt, to express their objection to the erosion of democratic governance in Rivers State.

Meanwhile, the suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called for the continued protection of workers‘ rights in the country.

Fubara, who made the call in a message of solidarity and appreciation, issued in Port Harcourt, as the nation marks the 2025 Workers Day, has extended warm greetings and heartfelt commendation to the hardworking men and women who drive the state’s progress.

He praised the resilience, dedication, and professionalism of the Rivers workforce, particularly in light of ongoing challenges to democratic governance in the state. He described their commitment as the backbone of the state‘s development and a beacon of hope for a better future.

Fubara said that this year’s theme, “Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate,” underscored the urgent need to protect workers amid escalating environmental threats and socio-political uncertainties, and stressed the importance of prioritising occupational safety and well-being as essential pillars for sustainable growth.
