The Rotary Action Group for Peace (RAGFP) in Taraba State has engaged the state government and security agencies to tackle rising social vices, through education, advocacy and community engagements.
The state coordinator RAGFP, Rotarian Zainab Gajiga, disclosed this while briefing the press after the National Community Violence Reduction programme held in Jalingo, the state capital.
Gajiga who was represented by the assistant state coordinator Kayode Asher, revealed that the launch of the programme would help in tackling the root causes of violence by engaging all stakeholders in peace building initiatives.
She said that, the group will provide training for community members, leaders and organisations as well partner between community groups and other stakeholders to leverage resources and expertise.
In their separate presentations, Rotarian Young Mathew Atiku and Job Sehiro all stressed the need of enlightening the youths on the dangers of drug abuse and improper use of social media, that often precipitates violence.
The assistant commissioner of Police, Taraba State Police Command, Yakubu Itse appreciated the club for coming up with the laudable programme, and assured of the command’s support whenever the need arises.
Rotarian Samuel Tari, Magic President Rotary Club Jalingo Prestige and President Elect Rotary Club Jalingo City, Monica Awu in their separate remarks maintained that, there is need to close the knowledge gap that often lead to misunderstanding and flared tempers over issues that could be amicably resolved.
Tari, lamented that social vices seems to be on the rise, inflamed by the social media and lack of conscious community collaboration in upbringing of children, and maintained that, deliberate efforts must be put in place to tackle the menace before it consumes the society.
“I must say that this is a very important initiative. Social vices are quickly taking a toll on our youths, fuelled by the Social Media platforms.
“It is worrisome and we must begin to make deliberate efforts to tackle this now. To do this, we must take the campaign to where it matters and make sure that we get everyone to key into it,” Tari said.
