Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka believes England possess the quality and mentality required to end their long wait for FIFA World Cup success.
The Three Lions have not lifted football’s biggest prize since their historic triumph on home soil in 1966, when they defeated West Germany at Wembley Stadium.
Despite decades of disappointment, England have shown encouraging progress in recent tournaments. They reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and advanced to the quarter-finals in Qatar four years later, where they were narrowly eliminated by eventual finalists France.
Saka, who played a prominent role in the Qatar campaign, believes the current squad has the perfect blend of talent, competition and hunger to challenge for global honours.
Speaking to FIFA.com, the Arsenal winger expressed confidence that England can finally secure a second World Cup title.
“I see strengths everywhere and I also see a lot of hunger and passion to win, which is a great balance and is what you need,” Saka said.
“This team has so much talent, but at the same time so much competition. It’s healthy, it’s good, it’s a great environment and I think we’re all thriving.”
The 24-year-old believes internal competition for places has strengthened the squad and created a winning mentality.
With expectations rising ahead of the tournament, Saka remains convinced England are capable of ending their 60-year World Cup drought.
