This achievement was confirmed through records obtained from the Rules and Business Office of the Senate yesterday in Abuja.

Among the landmark bills sponsored by Senator Barau is the Northwest Development Commission Bill, which has since been signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

The Act establishes the Northwest Development Commission (NWDC), a pivotal institution aimed at fostering regional development and addressing pressing socio-economic challenges in the Northwest geopolitical zone.

In recognition of his exceptional legislative contributions, journalists covering the Senate awarded Senator Barau for his exemplary performance as the highest sponsor of private member bills.

The award ceremony took place last Friday, with the Deputy Senate President praised for his dedication to legislative excellence despite his demanding role as a presiding officer.

Speaking after receiving the award, Senator Barau expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the interests of his constituents in Kano North Senatorial District and Nigerians at large.

“Your recognition of my legislative inputs in the Senate within the last 18 months, particularly on development-driven bills, is a source of motivation. This award energizes and propels me to do more. To whom much is given, much is expected,” he stated.

He further emphasized the importance of collaboration between lawmakers and the media, describing the relationship as “sine qua non” to legislative success.

“Without you reporting what happens here, Nigerians can’t know what we are doing. Your role ensures that the legislature remains vibrant and accountable,” he noted.

Presenting the award, the Chairman of the Senate Press Corps, Mr. James Itodo, highlighted that the honour was strictly based on verifiable records of performance, underscoring Senator Barau’s dedication to impactful legislative work.

The recognition of Senator Barau’s efforts is expected to inspire greater legislative competitiveness among his colleagues, further enhancing the vibrancy and productivity of the Senate for the good of Nigeria.
