A socio-political pressure group, Concerned Youths of Delta Ijaw, has thrown its weight behind the candidature of Senate Godswill Akpobio as the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.
The group also called on Senators-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rally round Senator Akpabio for the position of the Senate President as directed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC and endorsed by President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The group while describing Senator Akpabio’s choice as a round peg in a round hole, pointed out that the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, needed an experienced, viable and intelligent personality like Akpabio who can at all times sustain the cordial relationship between the executive and legislature, to deliver dividends of good governance to Nigerians.
ln a press statement by the group’s Coordinator, Comr. Ebikeme Abanre, and Secretary, Engr. Patrick Soji Disi, the group called on all Senators-elect to prioritise the stability of the 10th National Assembly to meet the yearnings of Nigerians over pecuniary gains.
“We the Concerned Youths of Delta Ijaw are offering our unwavering support for the candidature of Sen. Akpabio for as the president of the 10th Assembly,” it stated, adding that they have confidence in Akpabio’s track record while he was a governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
“As a Niger Delta group that is pro-development and good governance, we trust in the leadership of Sen. Akpabio to speak for and to defend the interest of the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a nation.
“We appeal to Senators-elect to respect the zoning arrangement as approved by the leadership of the APC. Today the South-West has a president-elect, and North-East Vice President-elect, then it is only fair that the position of Senate president should be given to the South-South that sustains the economy of the nation.
“We assure Nigerians that a Senate leadership under Akpabio will be more productive and stable as he has all requisite legislative leadership skills to chair the 10th Senate” the statement reads in part.
The group equally called on all those throwing tantrums and allegations against the person of Akpabio to desist from doing so as the time for politics has passed, adding that those plotting corruption allegations against Akpabio do not mean well for the incoming administration of President-elect Bola Tinubu.
