Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and formally joined the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), citing alleged lack of internal democracy and marginalisation within the ruling party.

The senator announced his defection in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Comrade Sabo Mohammed.

According to the statement, Senator Buba took the decision to leave the APC on Sunday, May 24, 2026, following consultations with political associates, stakeholders, youths, women groups and supporters across Bauchi State.

LEADERSHIP recalls that the senator had on May 20 withdrawn from the APC governorship primary election in Bauchi State, alleging violations of the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act and democratic principles.

Explaining his decision to defect, Senator Buba accused the APC of lacking fairness and internal democracy, alleging that genuine party members and grassroots supporters were increasingly being sidelined in decision-making processes.

He described the PRP as a platform founded on justice, accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and people-oriented leadership, adding that the party remains committed to democratic values and constitutional governance.

According to him, his movement to the PRP was driven by the need to strengthen democratic governance, protect the interests of ordinary citizens and provide responsive leadership to the people of Bauchi State.

“Democracy can only thrive where political parties uphold fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy, and active participation of members in decision-making processes,” the senator stated.

He stressed the need for patriotic leaders to unite in tackling poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance across the country.

“Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses,” he added.

Senator Buba also reaffirmed his commitment to policies aimed at youth empowerment, job creation, education, healthcare, agriculture, poverty reduction, infrastructure development, women empowerment and community security.

He called on his supporters and political allies to join him in the PRP to continue what he described as the collective struggle for good governance, accountability and sustainable development in Bauchi State.

The lawmaker assured residents of the state that his commitment to their progress and welfare remains unwavering, promising to continue providing effective representation at all levels.
