Former deputy president of the Senate Ovie Omo-Agege said Artificial Intelligence (AI) enables social media monitoring and sentiment analysis and equips people to track governance and its dynamics.
He stated this in Asaba in his remarks at the Distinguished Nigerian Awards, organised by Oasis Magazine.
Speaking on “Artificial Intelligence and the Contemporary Media Space” as a distinguished guest of honour, Senator Omo-Agege said AI has profoundly impacted virtually every area of business, governance, and politics.
He urged media practitioners to leverage its limitless versatility to seek good governance, social impact, and positive change. He also suggested that it should be used to hold those holding public office accountable.
Represented by Mr Chuks Erhire, he noted that as AI is used regularly to verify content to prevent disinformation, it can be deployed to track the performance of government at all levels.
“The integration of AI in the media space necessitates a thoughtful approach, balancing innovation with accountability and transparency to ensure a responsible and beneficial coexistence of humans.
“AI-generated content can be misused to create convincing but false information, thereby threatening media credibility. They blur the lines between human and artificial communication,” he stated.
Earlier, the Publisher of Oasis Magazine, Mr Daniel Umukoro, said AI would help media practitioners understand the new techniques in the media.
He said good reportage remains a cornerstone of the magazine to become productive members of society, contributing to the nation‘s growth.
