Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called on the federal government to extend the demolition policy applied to suspected kidnappers’ hideouts to properties allegedly linked to corrupt politicians and public officials.

Sowore made the call in a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, while reacting to the demolition of a building allegedly used by kidnappers in Oyo State.

According to him, if authorities consider it appropriate to demolish properties associated with kidnapping, then the same approach should be applied to assets acquired through stolen public funds.

“If we are going to demolish houses linked to kidnapping, then we must also demolish mansions built with stolen public funds,” Sowore said.

He argued that corruption remains one of the most damaging crimes against Nigerians because it deprives citizens of access to healthcare, education, infrastructure, jobs and other basic services.

The activist maintained that public officials and politically exposed persons who accumulate wealth through corruption should face similar punitive measures, including the demolition of such properties.

Sowore said corruption has a broader societal impact than often acknowledged, stressing that it “kidnaps” opportunities and the future of millions of Nigerians.

His comments followed the demolition of a building in the Lako Community area of Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State by the state government.

The property was allegedly used as a hideout by kidnappers who abducted Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her 12-year-old twin sons.

The building was demolished less than 48 hours after security operatives rescued the victims.

Oyo State authorities said the action reflects the government’s zero-tolerance stance against kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Sowore, however, insisted that the fight against crime must be applied without double standards, adding that corruption should attract sanctions similar to those imposed on other criminal activities.
