Governments at all levels have been urged to do more in checking actions that worsen climate change.

Climate change enthusiasts who made the appeal in Yola on Friday, said the effects of climate change are already evident and efforts to halt the phenomenon need to be intensified.

The specialists articulated their opinions during a TV talk show hosted by a pro-environment non-governmental organisation, Brook Initiative, on the theme, “Building a Resilient Future.”

One of the panelists, Mr Julius Mbidomti of the North East Multi-sectoral Crisis Recovery Project, said climate change is a matter that humanity must address with all seriousness because of the devastation that it could cause in the next 10 to 15 years.

He said it is not only about government but about other stakeholders and individuals, stressing that, “We must all work to conserve our planet.”

The second guest in the talk show which was televised live, Mr Yohana Moses, who is also the principal special adviser on NGOs to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, said, “Climate change impacts are increasingly happening. Many people died in Adamawa State last year because of excessive heat. This year already, signs of excessive sand storms are evident. So, we have to be intentional in our handling of climate change issues.”

He announced that the Adamawa State government has started developing a climate change policy, explaining however that it is a process that may take up to 2027 to conclude.

He said the policy is being developed by a body created for that purpose, the Adamawa Climate Sector Working Group, inaugurated by the governor, which has established the Climate Change Research Institution to crystalise all research results for the policy.

The ‘Building a Resilient Future TV Talk Show’ was jointly anchored by a broadcaster, Samamo-Clarkson Dedan and the managing director of the host-NGO, the Brook Initiative, Kauna Hamman.

Haman explained to newsmen who covered the event that her NGO staged the talk show to draw attention of the public to the challenges of persistent climate change.
