Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has received members of the steering committee of the Nigeria Police Force on a courtesy visit. The committee was established to develop a framework for the creation of state police.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on March 4, 2026, inaugurated an eight-member committee to work on the framework for state police.

Senator Barau, who chairs the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, received the committee, led by its chairman, Professor Olu Ogunsakin, in Abuja.

Professor Ogunsakin, according to a statement by the spokesperson to the deputy president of the senate, Ismail Mudashir, briefed Senator Barau on the committee’s mandate and sought the senate’s advice and contributions to enrich its report.

In his response, Senator Barau commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to enhance security across the country.

He tasked members of the committee to develop measures that would promote accountability, safeguard against abuse, and embark on public enlightenment.

“You must, most importantly, work on a structure that will create a robust public safety mechanism and engender a secure nation.

“During the senate’s public hearings on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution, Nigerians raised concerns and fears about the establishment of state police. We must create a system that addresses and allays those fears,” he said.

One of the bills before the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution seeks to amend the Constitution to allow for the establishment of state and community police, with the aim of enhancing local law enforcement capabilities and strengthening community engagement through a structured legal framework.

To promote inclusivity and broad participation, the committee, under the chairmanship of Senator Barau, conducted zonal public hearings across the six geopolitical zones of the country, giving stakeholders the opportunity to contribute to the amendment process.
