The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, has called for the strengthening of citizens’ participation in Nigeria’s democratic process, stressing the need for a democracy that truly reflects the will of the people.

Dantalle made the call during an Iftar (breaking of fast) gathering organised by Lilian Adebayo, wife of the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, on Thursday in Abuja.

He noted that democracy thrives on inclusion and participation, allowing citizens to freely choose their leaders while ensuring that the electoral process reflects the collective will of the people.

Dantalle also advocated policy adjustments in Nigeria’s electoral framework to deepen democratic participation.

He expressed concern over certain provisions that may limit citizens’ involvement, including indirect party primaries and the mandatory inclusion of the National Identification Number (NIN) in the electoral process.

“The ruling party needs to intervene, consult broadly and reform essential electoral laws to sustain Nigeria’s multi-party democracy,” he said.

The IPAC chairman emphasised that political competition should not be driven by a “win-at-all-costs mentality,” but rather guided by respect for legal processes and democratic principles.

He commended the SDP for organising the Iftar gathering, noting that such engagements promote unity and dialogue among political actors.

Speaking at the event, the SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, also called for policies that would strengthen citizens’ participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.

He stressed the importance of humility, justice and accountability in leadership, drawing lessons from the values promoted during the Ramadan season.

“Democracy ultimately belongs to the Nigerian people and not to a limited group of political office holders,” he said.

Also speaking, the SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Umar Gombe, highlighted the importance of unity and constructive political engagement in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

He commended journalists for their role in informing the public and promoting democratic accountability, while urging political actors to embrace peaceful engagement and collaboration.
