The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has condemned the mob lynching of Ummulkhair in Mararaban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, describing the incident as one of the darkest manifestations of lawlessness and a reflection of the growing collapse of moral values in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Secretary-General of JNI, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the Sultan expressed shock and grief over the killing, describing the mob action as ungodly and calling for justice for the victim.

He warned against what he described as Nigeria’s descent into lawless barbarism and urged security agencies to carry out a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the statement, all individuals directly or indirectly involved in the lynching should be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), under the leadership of its President-General, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, received with profound shock, immense grief, and utter disbelief the deeply disturbing news of the gruesome mob lynching of Ummulkhair at Mararaban Jos, Kaduna State.

“The incident has once again exposed the frightening collapse of moral restraint, the dangerous spread of misinformation, and the alarming normalisation of jungle justice in the Nigerian state. Indeed, human life in Nigeria has been reduced to nothing with the increasing stains of blood on the Nigerian shore,” the statement said.

The JNI also raised concerns over allegations of police complicity, particularly claims that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Nigeria Police Force, Mararaban Jos Division, allegedly surrendered the victim to the mob instead of protecting her.

“Particularly disturbing are allegations surrounding the conduct of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Nigeria Police Force, Mararaban Jos Division, who reportedly surrendered the victim to the angry mob instead of guaranteeing her constitutional protection,” the statement added.

The Islamic organisation said that if investigations established negligence, misconduct or deliberate complicity by any police personnel, those responsible should face prosecution.

“If investigations confirm negligence, misconduct, or deliberate complicity, JNI demands that all officers involved directly or indirectly be prosecuted accordingly and made to face the full consequences of the law, as the duty of law enforcement is the protection of life — never surrendering citizens to mob violence,” it stated.

JNI also called for the payment of compensation (Diyya) to the bereaved family in the interest of justice and to prevent any possibility of reprisal.

The organisation further urged the Kaduna State Government and other relevant authorities to provide lasting support for the victim’s family, including taking responsibility for the education of Ummulkhair’s daughters and other children.

It stressed that any intervention should go beyond symbolic gestures and provide meaningful assistance to cushion the hardship faced by the bereaved family.
