Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has expressed strong disappointment over Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise’s decision to represent France internationally, insisting the 24-year-old belongs in Nigeria’s green-white-green jersey.
On his Global Football Insights Podcast, ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid, Oliseh praised the former Crystal Palace star’s talent but voiced frustration.
“When I see the way Olise plays, I love it,” Oliseh said. “But it gets me angry that I am saying Olise should not be wearing the French national team jersey; he should be wearing the green-white-green jersey of Nigeria.”
The ex-Juventus and Borussia Dortmund midfielder highlighted Olise’s composure: “He is so good and might one day contend for the Ballon d’Or. Defenders are feeling helpless against him, and now they foul him, insult him to provoke him, and he is a quiet person.”
Born in England to a Nigerian father and French-Algerian mother, Olise qualifies for Nigeria, England, France, and Algeria. Despite interest from several, he debuted for France in 2023.
Oliseh’s remarks fuel ongoing debates about Nigerian-eligible players opting for European nations—a topic he often addresses in punditry.
