Amas Obasogie, the Super Eagles goalkeeper, has firmly denied allegations of match-fixing that have recently surfaced against him. The Tanzanian Premier League club, Singida Black Stars, announced on Friday that they have suspended Obasogie for a period of three months. This suspension follows claims that he was involved in manipulating the outcomes of both a CAF Confederation Cup match and a domestic league game.
In a resolute statement, the 26-year-old goalkeeper expressed his determination to clear his name, insisting, “I state clearly that I have never engaged in match-fixing and will never do so.” Obasogie highlighted that the goals conceded during the CAF Confederation Cup match against Flambeau de Centre, as well as in the NBC Premier League fixture against Namungo FC, were due to genuine footballing errors rather than any form of deliberate misconduct.
“I accept full responsibility for my performance; however, mistakes on the field must not be mistaken for match manipulation,” he clarified, emphasising the importance of differentiating between unintentional errors and malicious intent.
The former Bendel Insurance shot stopper also reaffirmed his commitment to Singida Black Stars SC, a club he holds in high regard. “I’m committed to serving the club with honour and contributing to its success,” he added, indicating his desire to continue being a valuable asset to the team during this challenging period.
As investigations continue, the football community awaits further developments in this case, with Obasogie’s reputation hanging in the balance.
