Defending champions Nigeria are determined to retain the Unity Cup title when they face Jamaica in Saturday’s final at Charlton Athletic Stadium in London.
Head coach Éric Chelle has praised his players following their impressive 2-0 semi-final victory over Zimbabwe and hinted that further tactical adjustments could be made ahead of the showdown with the Reggae Boyz.
Nigeria and Jamaica have developed a fierce rivalry in the competition, with the Super Eagles defeating the Caribbean side on penalties in last year’s final after an entertaining 2-2 draw.
The Super Eagles previously won the tournament in 2002 and 2004, establishing themselves as the most successful team in the competition’s history.
Speaking ahead of the final, Chelle suggested he may rotate his squad once again as he continues assessing several new faces introduced during the tournament.
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is expected to retain his place after keeping a clean sheet against Zimbabwe.
Defenders Chibueze Oputa, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Igoh Ogbu and Obinna Igboke could also maintain their positions following an assured defensive display in the semi-final.
Midfielders Tochukwu Nnadi, Alhassan Yusuf and Samson Tijani are all in contention to start again, while attacking options Terem Moffi, Philip Otele and debut hero Femi Azeez are expected to play key roles.
Azeez was one of the standout performers against Zimbabwe, scoring twice on his senior debut to immediately win over the technical crew and supporters.
His achievement made him the first player to score twice on his Nigeria debut since Mathias Obianika accomplished the feat 55 years ago against Burkina Faso.
Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, midfielder Tosin Oyedokun and forwards Owen Oseni and Rafiu Durosinmi are also available after making positive contributions from the bench during the semi-final.
The Super Eagles continued preparations on Thursday with a training session at Cray Valley, while the official pre-match session is scheduled to hold at The Valley on Friday.
With Jamaica equally determined to end Nigeria’s dominance, Saturday’s final is expected to produce another highly competitive encounter between two familiar rivals.
