The Super Falcons of Nigeria will battle the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon on Sunday(Today),in the quarter-finals of the WAFCON 2026 tournament in Casablanca.

Beyond a place in the semi-finals, the winner secures automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, raising the stakes considerably for both sides.

Nigeria enter the knockout stage as the tournament’s most decorated team with 10 titles, but their group phase performance raised serious concerns.

They suffered a shocking 3-2 loss to Malawi, conceded five goals across three matches, and showed defensive vulnerabilities that head coach Justin Madugu has openly described as “worrisome.”

Cameroon, by contrast, have been one of the most impressive teams so far. They finished top of their group without defeat and conceded just two goals, showcasing the kind of defensive discipline that has led some pundits to tip them as favourites for today’s clash.

The rivalry between these two African powerhouses is well established. In 15 previous meetings, Nigeria have won nine to Cameroon’s four, including a 1-0 victory when they last met at the WAFCON quarter-finals in 2022. The Lionesses will be eager to overturn that result and deny their old rivals a place on the world stage.

For Nigeria, the mission is clear: tighten up at the back and rediscover the resilience that has defined their championship pedigree.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade has said the team is ready to do “whatever they have to get the World Cup ticket,” but they must improve significantly to see off a confident Cameroon side.

Sunday’s winner secures a semi-final date and, more importantly, a ticket to Brazil 2027. With everything on the line, this quarter-final promises to be a tense, hard-fought contest between two teams with everything to play for.
