Nigeria women’s national football team have discovered their route in the qualification campaign for the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympics, with a second-round tie awaiting against either Sudan women’s national football team or Comoros women’s national football team.
The draw ceremony, conducted at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football in Cairo, officially set the qualification pathway for African nations vying for a place at the global showpiece in Los Angeles.
The qualification series will be fiercely contested, comprising five knockout rounds played on a home-and-away basis. Sudan and Comoros are set to meet in the opening round between 1 and 9 June, with the winner progressing to face Nigeria in the second round scheduled for 5 to 13 October.
As one of Africa’s most successful women’s teams, the Super Falcons will enter the competition with high expectations. Their pedigree and experience on the continental stage make them strong contenders to secure one of the two available African slots for the Olympic Games.
Nigeria previously represented the continent at the 2024 Summer Olympics alongside Zambia women’s national football team, underlining their consistency at the highest level of women’s football.
However, the road to Los Angeles will not be straightforward. The knockout format leaves little room for error, and emerging teams across Africa continue to close the gap on traditional powerhouses. Matches against Sudan or Comoros, while seemingly favourable on paper, will still demand focus and professionalism.
For the Super Falcons, the qualifiers offer an opportunity not only to secure Olympic participation but also to reaffirm their dominance in African women’s football. With a blend of experienced internationals and rising talents, Nigeria will be aiming to navigate the rounds successfully and return to the Olympic stage in 2028.
