Nigeria’s Under-19 women’s cricket team held their nerve to secure a pulsating one-run victory over South Africa in a Super Over showdown at the TBS Cricket Oval in Lagos, yesterday.
The high-octane Patricia Kambarami Cup clash ended in a tie after both sides posted 133 runs, before Nigeria clinched the decider 10–9 in a tense one-over eliminator.
South Africa’s innings was anchored by captain Mieke van Voorst, who struck a superb 69 off 47 balls, peppered with 11 boundaries, to guide her side to 133/7. Nigeria’s bowlers had earlier made early inroads, with Peace Usen (2/16) and Amusa Muheebat (2/17) reducing the visitors to 18/3 inside the powerplay.
Van Voorst steadied the innings with key partnerships, notably a 50-run stand with Jae-Leigh Filander (16), before adding 40 more alongside Siphokuhle Masilela (20) to push South Africa past the 100-mark.
In reply, Nigeria were powered by a sensational knock from captain Lucky Piety, who blasted an unbeaten 66 off just 35 balls. Her explosive innings—featuring three sixes and nine fours—shifted the momentum decisively, particularly during a brutal assault that yielded 24 runs in the 16th over.
With 11 required from the final over, South Africa held firm to concede just 10 runs and force a Super Over.
In the decider, Piety and Salome Sunday combined for 10/0 before Muheebat delivered under pressure, dismissing Van Voorst and restricting South Africa to 9/1 to seal a dramatic win.
Both teams are set to meet again in the second semi-final on 27 March, promising another enthralling encounter.
