Uneasy calm envelops Jos, Plateau State, and its surroundings ahead of Friday’s verdict from the Supreme Court regarding the governorship tussle between the incumbent governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and his arch-rival, Nentawe Yitwatda of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Although the roads are busy with motorists plying them as usual, people are gathering in markets, shops, and newspaper stands, engaging in discussions and arguments about the potential outcome of the Supreme Court’s judgment tomorrow.

Supporters of the two political parties, APC and PDP, have turned to prayer warriors, seeking God’s intervention for a resounding victory.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the PDP, Plateau State Chapter, Hon. Chris Hassan, has urged his members to offer prayers and observe a fast for a favourable judgment.

Hassan, in a statement issued in Jos and signed by his Personal Assistant on Media and Protocol, Kefas Sumdi, expressed confidence that, even though they walk through the darkest valley, they will fear no evil, for God is with them.

The statement read, “The prayer and fasting became necessary for God to intervene in the litigation battle as the mandate of the party led by Gov. Caleb Mutfwang will be affirmed by His Grace.”

Hon. Hassan called on its members to be focused, calm, and not to panic but to “in everything, with prayer and supplication, let requests be made unto God.”

In the same vein, the APC in Plateau State has called on all its members, supporters, and well-wishers to remain calm and refrain from any acts contrary to the culture of maintaining decorum and peace in all their conduct.

APC, in a statement signed and issued in Jos by the state publicity secretary, Sylvanus Namang, stated that whatever direction the decision of the Apex Court goes, the APC, which has been a respecter of the rule of law and a strong believer in the judicial system, would welcome the outcome in good faith.

He enjoined security agencies in the state to be extra vigilant to ensure that law and order is maintained, adding that the party wishes to restate its position on the respect for constitutionalism and the rule of law, which are sacrosanct for democracy and good governance, the statement added.

Similarly, the former senator representing Plateau South, Jeremiah Timbut Useni, has called on the good people of Plateau, both within and outside the PDP, to remain calm and law-abiding.

Lt Gen Jeremiah Useni stated that regardless of the direction of the judgment, the peace and unity of Plateau State should be their paramount interest.

He called on political leaders to desist from dishonourable and sharp practices within the political party system, which affects democratic principles.
