The Nasarawa State Government has sent a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to amend the local government law in tandem with the autonomy granted the third tier of government by the Supreme Court.

The document was titled, “A Bill for a Law to Repeal and Re-enact the Establishment, Structure, Composition, Finance and Function of Local Government System in Nasarawa State, 2024 and Other Matters Connected Thereto”.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau said the bill was a step toward restructuring of the local government system to conform with the ruling of the Supreme Court which granted financial autonomy to the local government.

Jatau stated this after the House Leader, Hon. Suleiman Azara read the title of the bill for the first reading which was seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Luka Zhekaba.

“The amendment of the local government law will among other things, abolish the existing joint account as well as abolish the state Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs,” Dizaho said.

LEADERSHIP reports that the bill has been slated for second reading on 16th October, 2024.
