Suspected terrorists have attacked the Ipele community in the Owo local government area of Ondo State on Wednesday night, setting the Divisional Police Station ablaze and sending residents fleeing in panic.
LEADERSHIP gathered that no fewer than 20 assailants stormed the town in commando-style around 10 p.m., firing sporadically and targeting the police facility, which they razed down during the assault.
A source, who informed LEADERSHIP that the attack lasted for hours, disclosed that many people escaped into nearby bushes to avoid being harmed.
A resident, speaking anonymously, recounted: “It was a terrorist attack. The attackers, numbering about 20, came into Ipele and began shooting sporadically before hitting the Police Divisional Station.
“The sounds were terrifying—many of us fled into the bush, unable to withstand it.”
The motive of the attackers remained unknown. As of the of this report, no casualty has been confirmed, though security agencies have been deployed to the scene.
When contacted, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Jimoh Abayomi, confirmed that there was an attack in the town.
DSP Abayomi, however, noted that details were still emerging while promising a full update later.
