The Taraba State government has directed all political appointees, public and civil servants intending to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments before today, in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
The directive was contained in a public statement issued by the office of the special adviser to the governor on Political Matters and Special Duties, Rt Hon Josiah Sabo Kente.
According to the statement, the Electoral Act 2026 mandated any political appointee or public officeholder seeking nomination for an elective position to resign within the time prescribed by law before participating in party primaries or any electoral process.
The government said, the requirement was aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency and a level playing field for all aspirants, while protecting the integrity of public institutions.
“All affected public servants, political appointees and government functionaries in Taraba State, who have interest in contesting for any elective position in the forthcoming elections are hereby advised to formally tender their resignation letters on or before the end of February 2026, in strict compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 and other relevant regulations.
“The directive is intended to prevent conflict of interest in the discharge of public duties, promote accountability and transparency in governance, ensure adherence to the rule of law, and safeguard the credibility of both the electoral process and the state government,” the statement read in part.
The statement noted that the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas remains committed to constitutionalism, democratic principles and strict compliance with extant electoral laws.
It stressed that, Taraba State would continue to uphold responsible governance and political discipline.
The statement urged all concerned officials to act promptly to avoid legal complications or possible disqualification by relevant electoral authorities.
