TCN Upgrades Apapa Substation, Boosts Lagos Power Supply, 

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Lagos region, has recorded a major milestone in its network expansion drive with the successful energisation of two 60MVA 132/33kV power transformers at the rehabilitated Apapa Road Transmission Substation in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria.

TCN’s general manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, made this known in a statement, noting that the energisation carried out on April 17, 2026, also included the installation of modern Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), enhancing the substation’s operational efficiency and reliability.

She explained that with the addition of the new transformers, the capacity of the Apapa substation has increased from 60MVA to 180MVA, marking a threefold improvement in power handling capability.

“This development is expected to enhance bulk electricity supply to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), enabling improved distribution to key industrial and residential areas,” she said.

“Communities set to benefit from the upgraded infrastructure include Apapa Causeway, parts of Ijora, Amukoko, Ajegunle, Apapa Wharf, Tin Can Island and surrounding locations.”

She noted that the increased capacity is expected to reduce load constraints, improve voltage stability, and support economic activities, particularly in the Apapa axis, which hosts critical port and commercial operations.

Mbah further stated that the project underscores TCN’s continued commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s transmission network and ensuring efficient delivery of generated power to distribution companies for end-user consumption.

“It also aligns with broader efforts to modernise the country’s power infrastructure and address longstanding challenges in electricity supply,” she added.
