In a historic first, Team Nigeria Diaspora has received an official invitation to participate in this year’s London Youth Games. The team is set to compete in netball on June 13 and athletics on June 21, as part of the staggered event held between April and July.
This landmark invitation was announced by Clement Nwankpa Jr., Media Officer of the Nigeria Diaspora Talents Development Committee.
Dr. Tunde Adelakun, Chairman of the Nigeria Diaspora Talents Development Committee, expressed his enthusiasm, viewing the invitation as a significant endorsement of their efforts to harness the rich talent pool within the Nigerian diaspora.
“For the first time ever, organisers of the London Youth Games have agreed to invite Team Nigeria Diaspora,” Dr. Adelakun stated. “This is a big one for us as it allows us the chance to showcase the talents we have already put together and track other prospects.”
He emphasized the importance of such platforms for talent development: “It is not enough to spot these talents; there have to be platforms to access them as a team. The London Youth Games will afford us this opportunity.”
Dr. Adelakun also commended the National Sports Commission for their foresight in establishing the Diaspora Talents Development initiative.
“This is a game-changing initiative by the National Sports Commission… They are keen to ensure that we take full advantage of these immense talents of Nigerian descent in the diaspora to ensure that the nation doesn’t lack talents,” he added. “It is our assignment at the Nigeria Diaspora Talents Development Committee to spot, sensitize, and keep them in tune with their roots.”
