A technician has died following a structural accident during the construction of the stage for Shakira’s upcoming concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The incident occurred on Monday, while crews were preparing for the massive free concert scheduled for Saturday, May 2. Emergency services were called to the scene after the worker sustained severe injuries caused by a failure in a lifting system.

“Unfortunately, the technician passed away in hospital,” concert organiser, Bonus Track, confirmed in an official statement.

Witnesses at the site described a scene of confusion as the structure collapsed. Resident, Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, reported seeing people rush to the scene to help pull the victim from underneath the metal framework.

Crews have been working for several weeks on the venue, which is expected to host over one million attendees. The show is part of the singer’s record-breaking Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.

This tragedy marks the second time within a year that the singer’s production has faced safety challenges. In February 2025, a concert in Medellin, Colombia, was cancelled after a stage roof malfunctioned during assembly.

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro are expected to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the equipment failure to ensure the safety of the remaining crew and the public ahead of the weekend event.
