Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Geidam, the headquarters of Geidam local government area in Yobe State, destroying vehicles and trucks, including one carrying goods worth millions of naira.

The insurgents entered the town around 4:30 am on Friday while most residents were asleep and set fire to vehicles parked at the local government secretariat.

According to a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, the terrorists targeted the secretariat, burning a Toyota Hilux and a Sharon bus belonging to the local government.

“When they entered the town, they went straight to the secretariat and checked if anyone was present. Finding it empty, they set ablaze a Hilux and a Sharon bus at the secretariat.

“After leaving the secretariat, they encountered two trucks, one loaded with goods worth millions of naira belonging to traders, and set both trucks on fire, bringing the total number of vehicles burnt to four,” he said.

The resident added that no casualties were recorded during the attack and called on the Federal Government, the Yobe State Government and security agencies to continue supporting efforts to completely tackle the insurgents.

LEADERSHIP Sunday contacted the spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, who confirmed the incident but referred enquiries to the military, noting that Geidam falls under military operational control.

However, efforts to obtain comments from the acting spokesperson for Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Ibrahim Kaita Bishir, were unsuccessful.

A military source, however, said the officer had been transferred.
