As rising transportation costs intensify the pressure on businesses and households, the courier and dispatch sector is proving to be a lucrative frontier. For Nigerians navigating today’s challenging economic landscape, investing in logistics offers a strategic, high-yield avenue for generating vital secondary income.

Industry operators point out that a massive surge in demand for affordable delivery from both individuals and corporate clients has transformed the dispatch business into a goldmine. It is no longer just a trend, but a viable, high-yield investment capable of pumping in steady daily revenue. Today, it stands out as an attractive asset class capable of generating consistent, daily cash flow.

A recent investigation by LEADERSHIP Weekend reveals a growing trend of consumers opting for dispatch riders to deliver parcels, letters, and goods across locations. This shift is largely driven by a desire to avoid the high costs associated with taxis and commercial transportation.

Experts in the sector explained that with an initial capital ranging between N500,000 and N900,000, depending on the type of motorcycle, an investor can establish a functional courier service business. Fairly used motorcycles costing between N350,000 and N500,000 can also serve as a cheaper alternative for startups.

Operators noted that a successful dispatch business can gradually expand from one motorcycle to multiple bikes, creating employment opportunities for riders and administrative workers.

Fielding questions from our correspondent, a logistics operator, Comrade Victor Oriola, said investment in the dispatch business could become a major source of income if properly managed.

According to him, “Investment in dispatch business requires proper planning and adequate information to avoid costly mistakes. An investor must employ trustworthy riders who can deliver value and generate good daily returns.

“There is also the need for business registration, branding, operating permits, early working capital and an office space to run the business effectively.”

Oriola added that new investors could start as freelance delivery agents and regularise their operations as the business grows.

Another industry player, Comrade Fred Egoma, stressed the importance of compliance with regulatory requirements and careful recruitment of riders.

He advised prospective investors to obtain necessary approvals from both local and state authorities to avoid violating operational laws.

According to Egoma, “Any investor going into dispatch business should ensure proper documentation, including Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration, branding of motorcycles, provision of delivery boxes and weather-proof materials before commencing operations.

“It is also important to secure an operating licence from the NIPOST Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department and conduct thorough background checks on guarantors provided by riders.”

Stakeholders believe the dispatch and courier business will continue to attract investors as more Nigerians seek affordable and efficient delivery solutions in the face of economic challenges.
