Its history dates back to the early 1990s when the country gained independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Before this period, Azerbaijani football was governed by the Soviet football system, and teams from Azerbaijan played in the Soviet league structure.

After Azerbaijan declared independence in 1991, the need for a domestic football league became apparent. The inaugural season of the Azerbaijan Premier League began in 1992, just 1 year after the country’s independence. The first champion of the league was Neftçi Baku, a club that would go on to dominate Azerbaijani football in the early years. Neftçi Baku and other Azerbaijani teams can be wagered by using the mobile version of 1xBet too.

The establishment of the APL was a significant milestone in the development of football in Azerbaijan, marking the start of a new chapter in the country’s sporting history.

Dealing with different challenges

Throughout its early years, the league faced several challenges. What is not a challenge is to make your 1xBet login download to wager on football competitions from all over the world.

3 examples of those issues have been:

  • financial difficulties;
  • low attendance;
  • and political instability.

However, the competition grew steadily as the country’s economy improved, and football began to receive more attention. The Azerbaijani government, through various initiatives, started investing in the sport, leading to better infrastructure, including modern stadiums and training facilities.

Neftçi Baku, along with other clubs like Qarabağ FK and Khazar Lankaran, became the most successful teams in the league’s history. Qarabağ, in particular, emerged as a dominant force in recent decades, winning multiple league titles and establishing itself as the top club in the country. By downloading the 1xBet app, it will be possible to login and start wagering on this squad too.

Today, the Azerbaijan Premier League continues to grow, attracting foreign players and coaches, and playing a crucial role in promoting Azerbaijani football on the international stage. The league remains a symbol of Azerbaijan’s progress and its commitment to developing football talent at home.
